Royal Canin is a pet food company that
manufactures and supplies dog and cat food worldwide. The company also conducts
formula research and tests the nutritional needs of specific breeds of dogs and
cats. The founder of Royal Canin, a French veterinarian, established the
company after successfully using a grain-based formula food developed in his
garage to heal several pets with skin or fur conditions. After importing a food
extruder from the United States, the company became the first dry pet food
manufacturer in France. With a focus on breeders, Royal Canin's production
volume steadily increased and expanded to the entire European market. In 1972,
it was sold to the Guyomarc'h Group, leading to further expansion, especially
in research and development. In 1990, Royal Canin was acquired by BNP Paribas,
a French bank. The company was listed on the French stock exchange but delisted
after being acquired by Mars, Incorporated.
