Royal Canin is a pet food company that
manufactures and supplies dog and cat food globally. The company also conducts
formula research and tests the nutritional needs of specific breeds of dogs and
cats. It was established by a French veterinarian after successfully using a grain-based
formula food developed in his garage to heal several pets with skin or coat
issues. After importing food extruders from the United States, the company
became the first dry pet food manufacturer in France. With a focus on breeders,
Royal Canin's production steadily increased and expanded to the entire European
market. After being sold to the Guyomarc'h Group in 1972, the company entered a
further expansion phase, especially in terms of research and development. In
1990, Royal Canin was acquired by the French bank BNP Paribas. The company was
a publicly traded company on the French stock exchange but delisted after being
acquired by Mars, Incorporated.
