Royal Canin is a pet food company that manufactures and supplies dog and cat food worldwide. The company also conducts formula research and tests the nutritional needs of specific breeds of dogs and cats. After successfully using a grain-based formula developed in a garage to heal several pets with skin or fur problems, a French veterinarian founded Royal Canin. After importing a food extruder from the United States, the company became the first dry pet food manufacturer in France. With a focus on breeders, Royal Canin's production steadily increased and expanded to the entire European market. After being sold to the Guyomarc'h group in 1972, the company entered a further expansion phase, especially in research and development. In 1990, Royal Canin was acquired by BNP Paribas. The company was a publicly traded company on the French stock exchange but was delisted after being acquired by Mars, Incorporated.
